"Pre-School Bawat Barangay" expanded

Iloilo City (1 July 2005) -- Parents often have a hard time believing how the tuition of pre-school kids run by private individuals or groups could be higher than the tuition fees of college students. However this is the sad reality of things that have made private pre-school for a lot of kids impossible.

Figures show that right now sixty-percent (60%) of the country's 2.2 million five-year-olds are enrolled in private or public pre-schools. The DepED runs majority of these pre-schools, the DSWD and the local government units while a smaller number are privately owned and operated

Now parents have something to thank the government for. The Department of Education will expand and augment existing day care centers and pre-schools into what is called "Pre-school sa Bawat Barangay which will ensure that every child has access to pre-schooling before they enter first grade.

The project is expected to cover the current pre-school system with 2,169 barangays in 30 provinces and 11 regions across the country. An additional 168 pre-schools are planned to be set up which will serve 8,400 children. The day care center will have separate session for five-year olds and for three-to four year olds. The Department of Education will handle the training of the day care workers on pre-school curriculum for give-year olds.

The DepEd is encouraging local government are encouraged to open their own day care centers or preschools attached to a public elementary schools on a cost-sharing scheme with the DepEd, the DSWD, Council for the Welfare of Children, local government units and parent-teacher community associations.

A barangay is expected to spend fifty-thousand (P50, 000) for the operation of a day care for ten months while a pre-school would cost around one hundred fifty-thousand (P150, 000).

The Project expansion was launched in the Visayas by Secretary Butch Abad of the DepEd. The expansion is part of the Education for All thrust of government under its ten-point agenda. (PIA-6)
