Tourists, both foreign and domestic, including residents continue to feel the atmosphere of economic development as Australian officials started the implementation of some P44 million worth of provincial road projects on the so called "Paradise Island" of Siargao in Surigao del Norte on Saturday. Australian officials led by Deputy Ambassador Andrew Byrne, and Minister- counsellor Tito Mitra of the Australian Embassy in Manila spearheaded the groundbreaking ceremony for the road projects in the two villages of this town leading to the various resorts on the island. During the groundbreaking ceremony, the Australian officials were also accompanied by provincial and municipal officials led by Surigao del Norte Representatives Francisco T. Matugas (1st District) and Guillermo Romarate Jr. (2nd District), Surigao del Norte Gov. Sol F. Matugas, General Luna Mayor Jaime Rusillon, and Del Carmen Mayor Junior Coro.
The road project is part of the five-year P250 million Australian grant for Surigao del Norte's Road Improvement Project (RIP), said Matugas. The ground works for the P14 million Barangay 5-Catangnan Road, and the P30 million Sta. Monica Road is expected to immediately commence to hit the targeted timeline of completion, Matugas said. "This is really a big help by the Australian government. Also, a big boost to our growing tourism industry on this island," added Matugas. He said the Australian assistance is expected to generate livelihood opportunities for the villagers, and increase local revenues and employment on the island. - Manila Bulletin
