As the Maritime Week celebration kicked off this morning here in Western Visayas, lessons from the “unsinkable” Titanic were refreshed to enhance the commitment of those in the maritime sector for the attainment of international safety.

Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) Regional Director Mary Ann Z. Arcilla said that their theme for this year’s celebration “IMO 100 years after the Titanic” brings into consciousness the giving of importance by the members of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) a safer, secured, cleaner and efficient maritime at all times.

She further said, “Maritime safety is a collective concern, a shared responsibility and accountability of the ship operators, owners, maritime schools, media and the government agencies,” Arcilla contended.

Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) Director Winfred G. Elizalde also said the sinking of the Titanic, which was touted as unsinkable then, became the greatest sea disaster ever on April 15, 1912 with about 1,502 passengers killed.

Elizalde further said that the Titanic disaster resulted it preclude the most important international maritime safety treaty, Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), and other international laws.

“The sinking ushered a new era of safety,” the PPA director contended.

He said that as they celebrate Maritime Week, he is urging those in the maritime sector not to let the deaths of those people on board Titanic to be in vain by further improving the maritime safety measures.

He said that among the lessons he drew from the Titanic accident are the importance of pre-board, training of crew on disaster management, giving uttermost preference to safety of lives than the classification of passengers and not excluding those from the third class, provision of tender boats for evacuation and other life-saving equipment.

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
