The famous Batik of Indonesia will be showcased in a Batik Fashion Show to be held at the Marco Polo Davao on July 31, and in a trade and exhibit at SM City Davao on August 1 and 2.
Consul General Lalu Malik Partawana announced the twin events in Davao City to promote Indonesian fabrics, a highly developed art from that country.
Partawana said a variety of batik made products will be brought in from Indonesia, which are not available in the local market, will be on sale during the exhibit.
The activity will open with ribbon cutting with Indonesian performers on August 1.
Consul Partawana said Batik is Indonesia's traditional practice of dying cloth through wax resist methods, an intangible cultural heritage.
He said the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) will officially name batik as a cultural heritage in September this year.
The main batik making center is located in Central Java particularly from Yogyakarta, Surakarta, Pekalongan, Semarang, the Indonesian official said.
In a fact sheet issued by the Indonesian Consulate, batik meaning "to tattoo" from the use of a needed in process has been both an art and a craft for centuries. In Java, Indonesia, batik is part of an ancient tradition, and some of the finest batik cloth in the world is still there.
Indonesian batik used for clothing normally has an intricate pattern. Traditionally, wider curves were reserved for batik produced for nobles. The traditional cloth has natural colors (tones of indigo and brown) while contemporary pieces have more varieties of colors.
Contemporary batik, while owing much to the past, is markedly different from the more traditional and formal styles. Like the artist may use etching, discharge dyeing, stencils, different tools for waxing and dyeing, wax recipes with different resist values and work with silk, cotton, wool, leather, paper or even wood and ceramics.
The melted wax (Javanese: malam) is applied to cloth before being dipped in dye. It is common for people to use a mixture of beeswax and paraffin wax. The beeswax will hold to the fabric and the paraffin wax will allow cracking, which is a characteristic of batik. Wherever the wax was seeped through the fabric, the dye will not penetrate. Sometimes several colors are used, with a series of dyeing, drying and waxing steps.(PNA)
