Maguindanao will soon become the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao's "halal hub" that can supply food with Islamic approval in communities here and abroad.
"Halal" is an Arabic term to describe food that is underwent an Islamic ritual before preparation. Its opposite is "haraam," which literally means forbidden.
According to Mosib Guialel, Maguindanao’s provincial agriculturist, a series of fora were held to prepare people directly involved in food preparation on the importance of the process.
He said the forum is part of Maguindanao Gov. Toto Mangudadatu's efforts to promote halal industry in Maguindanao.
A Muslim cleric explained that halal does not only mean one is prohibited from
eating pork but also on healthy means of processing permissible food for human consumption.
The forum dubbed as "Halal for Peace 2012 and Onwards" was attended by local officials, businessmen, government agriculturist and Muslim religious leaders.
Guialel explained that the forum aims to generate public awareness about and support to the halal industry in the province.
Dr. Norodin Kuit, a veterinarian and foreign trained expert on halal, stressed the need for sanitation in abattoirs and markets where halal foods are sold.
