(PNA) - The National Food Authority (NFA) has assured the consuming public in Negros Oriental of sufficient rice supply in line with the possible decline of food production due to the effects of the dry spell.
NFA provincial manager Francisco Lorico said there is no reason to panic because they have been preparing for the possible increase of rice consumption this year. At present, a total of 80,000 bags of NFA rice are available to supply the needs of consumers, he added.
Lorico said the buffer stock is expected to last until the month of March although another 16,000 bags of NFA rice will be arriving anytime during the week.
According to Lorico they are not expecting the dry spell to affect the province although they are still preparing for enough volume of rice supply to prevent the consumers from panic-buying.
He also clarified that there is no price increase of NFA rice which is sold at P25 per kilo in all Tindahan Natin outlets and accredited NFA stores in the province.
Lorico said they are expecting an increase in the consumption of NFA rice because the corn production during the last cropping season lowered because of the erratic weather pattern.
The price of corn grits in the market is sold at P28 per kilo which is higher by P3 compared to NFA rice which is only P25 per kilo only.
Meanwhile, NFA Provincial Manager Lorico clarified that they are preparing for the request of some politicians for NFA rice. He said all such requests are being forwarded to the NFA regional office for approval.
