IMUS CITY, Cavite -- Southern Luzon State University’s (SLSU) Alyzza Pontesor emerged as the overall champion, while her schoolmates Camille Tambunting and Ana Verdadero landed 1st and 2nd runner-up in the recent agricultural quiz bee at the SLSU campus in Lucban, Quezon.
Organized by the Agricultural Training Institute (ATI) Calabarzon Regional Office, the quiz bee has drawn the participation of some 60 Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon) state university 3rd and 4th-year students.
ATI disclosed that the quiz bee is one of the highlights of ATI-Calbarzon’s 2nd annual search for ‘Kabataang OA’ in observance of November as “Organic Agriculture (OA) Month” pursuant to Proclamation No. 1030.
Marites P. Cosico, Center Director of ATI Calabarzon, expressed optimism the ATI program will serve as a challenge, and motivate the youth to continuously improve and surpass their efforts in farming and fishing and lead them to their successful career.
The activity aims to create awareness on organic agriculture as well as boost enrolment in agriculture and agriculture-related courses offered by state universities and colleges in the Calabarzon region.
The SLSU contingent bested other contenders from Batangas State University (BatSU) – Lobo whose bet Jonnel Albania landed 3rd runner-up; Cavite State University (CavSU) Main Campus in Indang; Laguna State Polytechnic University (LSPU)–Siniloan campus; University of the Philippines – Los Banos (UPLB) with student John Arrogante placing 4th runner-up; and the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) in Mulanay, Quezon.
The top 10 students competed in the easy round where the top five contestants with the highest scores competing in the final round.
The top five battled individually through a hands-on demonstration of the procedure in preparing a kilogram of fermented fruit juice.
SLSU’s Pontessor bested four others as this year’s “Kabataang OA” with the five finalists receiving their respective cash prizes, medals, trophies and certificates of recognition from ATI Calabarzon. (PNA)
