Caloocan Mayor Enrico "Recom" Echiverri has passed an executive order (EO) prohibiting smoking in public places.
Echiverri's EO adds more muscle to Caloocan's Enforcement Ordinance No. 447 series of 2008 which directs the city's constituents to do their smoking in private places.
The ordinance states the following penalties or fines for violators: first offense – a fine of P200; second offense – a fine of P500; third offense – a fine of P1,000, plus the possibility of jail time between three and six days, depending on the court’s decision.
Both laws also specifies that building owners or operators must provide a designated area for smokers with adequate ventilation as not to cause discomfort or inconvenience the non-smokers.
Likewise, Echiverri has also issued an order requiring all buildings to put up a “No Smoking†sign in order to remind people in the vicinity that smoking is strictly prohibited in the whole of Caloocan .
Even public utility vehicles were told to display No Smoking signs.
Drivers of these vehicles or building owners who fail to follow this directive may be penalized, the mayor said. - pna
