LOS BAŇOS, Laguna -- Twelve science and technology journalists, including the PNA Calabarzon Bureau, topped this year’s Department of Science and Technology (DOST)-CALABARZON 5th Tambuli Media Awardees during Monday’s awarding ceremony as part of the day-long celebration of the agency's 54th Anniversary at the regional agency’s science complex in Barangay Timugan here.

For print/newspaper, the individual category awardees went to Kervin Roi Katigbak, 1st place; Virgilio and Leonila Villaflor, 2nd and Rommel Madrigal, 3rd places, respectively while print institutional awardees were Tribune Post, 1st; Pahayagang Balikas, 2nd; and Exposé Newspaper, 3rd.

For radio, individual broadcast journalist winners were Daniel Castro, 1st; Yvonne Castillo, 2nd while the institutional category was won by DZJV 1458 Radyo Calabarzon.

For the web-based and online news, the Philippine News Agency (PNA) Calabarzon Bureau pioneered as the institutional category awardee while PNA correspondent Zen Trinidad romped off with the first prize under the individual category.

DOST said this year’s media entries now include the digital/online category in recognition of the technological age and the fast-changing arena in mainstream and social media especially the legitimate and official online and web-based news outlets.

The journos and media practitioners were also recognized for sharing the news and information on the DOST Calabarzon regional advances in S&T; improving media coverage and awareness of the current and future impact of regional advances in S&T; and in increasing public and netizens’ awareness on the regional S & T programs, projects and services.

The DOST award-giving body said that the selection process for the media contenders were kept under wraps and the winners were only announced during the awards rites.

The selection panel went through several single articles and stories based on the submitted number of entries, quality of stories, substance, and motivational appeal or impact on readers/listeners/viewers, and effectiveness of the style/approach/form of articles/reports released.

Provincial Science and Technology Center (PSTC)-Batangas Director Felina Malabanan also received the award in behalf of the Sikap Productions from Batangas State University (BSU) which was also declared champion in the 1st Inter-Collegiate Science Documentary Film Making competition in Batangas province.

The winning BSU entry for the Batangas PSTC “2017 Provincial S & T Week Celebration” documentary tilt featured the Taliba Soap produced by the Taliba Women Group in San Luis, Batangas.

Winners received plaques of recognitions and cash prizes.

DOST-Calabarzon Director Dr. Alexander R. Madrigal, and Assistant Director Dr. Lydia Manguiat presented the S & T media awards as incentives and “one way of giving back and acknowledging our partner stakeholders in the media industry for their contributions to our agency’s accomplishments.”

A brainchild of Madrigal, the biennial “Tambuli Media Awards” are given to deserving regional and local media practitioners in the region comprising print and broadcast journalists, publishers, and radio stations and online and web-based category on S & T news from Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon provinces.

Madrigal initiated the awards in 2000 to be conferred every five years when he was then the DOST Supervising Science Research Specialist and now the Regional Director and shortened the media awards every two years for individual and institutional categories.

The “tambuli’ for which the award was named symbolizes a sound instrument made from either an animal hide or horn that “resonates noble reverberations used in celebrations especially in spreading the good news.” (Robert A. Maico/PNA)
