S. Leyte anti-landslide project completed in January

MAASIN CITY -- The PHP101.71-million project designed to prevent landslide and rock fall along Southern Leyte’s major road is set to be completed January next year, according to a report released by the Department of Public Works and Highways on Monday.

The project in Kahupian village in Sogod town, which started March 2017, is now 82 percent complete.

“This road section has been identified as one of the areas that are very prone to landslides. There are many times that this section has been closed to traffic as landslide debris block the highways,” District Engineer Ma. Margarita Junia said in a mobile phone interview.

The project is the first in the province to use high tensile wire netting for slope stabilization developed in Switzerland, Junia said.

The method of slope stabilization uses rock or soil anchors to pin the netting to the slope and the addition of an erosion control mat designed to prevent landslides.

Using this method, the shape of the slope is retained and it is even possible to regrow the slope vegetation, hence, contributing to slope stability. Additionally, its porous quality prevents water pressure build-up.

The Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) ranked Southern Leyte province as the seventh most vulnerable to heavy landslides in the Philippines.

Based on MGB’s geo-hazard mapping and assessment, the province recorded a 78 percent landslide probability. (PNA)
