The Cebu Provincial Board (PB) on Monday unanimously passed a resolution extending its sympathy to the bereaved family of the late Cebuano former lawmaker and retired Court of Appeals Justice Regalado Maambong.

The House of Representatives earlier approved a resolution expressing its condolences to the family of the late Cebuano lawmaker.

It was authored by Rep. Eduardo R. Gullas (Cebu, first district).

The PB said all his endeavors as educator, lawyer, legislator, judge and public servant was an example of competence, integrity and dedication.

The PB added that Maambong’s untimely demise was a great loss not only to his bereaved family, but to the Cebuanos and the entire Filipino nation.

Maambong succumbed to cancer last May 27. He was 72.

His son, former PB member Victor Maambong, said he will bring the ashes of his father to the latter’s hometown in Barangay Lunas, Asturias, Cebu this week.

The younger Maambong said his family would like to keep to themselves the exact date when the ashes will be brought to Asturias, heeding his father’s wish to have a simple wake.

The retired justice’s short wake was held at St. Peter’s Memorial Chapel on Quezon Ave., and he was cremated at the Quezon City Columbarium.

The elder Maambong previously served as a commissioner of the Commission on Elections and was one of the senatorial candidates in the May 2010 elections.

Cebu Vice Gov. Agnes Magpale said they wanted to hold a necrological service at the PB Session Hall for at least one day because the late Maambong had served as a PB member from 1980 to 1984.

But before his death, he had requested his family not to hold necrological services for him.

A copy of the two-page resolution will be given to his family through the younger Maambong.

It was the request of the late Maambong to be cremated two days after his wake, but his family found it difficult to follow because of the requests from his classmates in the college of law in Ateneo de Manila and former partners in the judiciary to give them time to honor and pay homage to their colleague.
