The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) regional office will start the rehabilitation of the San Fernando-Sto. Tomas-Minalin tail dike on the second week of October, this year.
Engineer Loreta Malaluan, DPWH assistant regional director, said some P34-million has been allotted for the closure of the two breached portions of the tail dike.
The tail dike was breached during the height of torrential
monsoon rains last month that resulted to massive flooding in the province, affecting some 227,400 families or 980,148 individuals.
"We will still arrange the documentations. If negotiated, we are going to choose at least three contractors who would bid so that we can start the rehabilitation project," Malaluan said.
For the meantine, Maluluan said the desilting and dredging operations for the rechanneling of water going to Manila Bay is still ongoing.
The rechanneling is the immediate action taken to minimize the entry of water in the breached portions of the tail dike in order to start the rehabilitation and closure of the scoured portion.
She said the DPWH, together with the provincial government and concerned local government units (LGUs) have so far dredged some 1.5 kilometers from Gugu river in Bacolor town going to downstream portion in Minalin town since the rechanneling works started a month ago.
Aside from rechanneling, she said, the DPWH is also planning to widen and deepen the rechanneled waterways in the area.
"We need to fast track the dredging activities in time for the start of the rehabilitation of the breached tail dike next month," she added.
