Red tide hits Bataan
« on: May 26, 2020, 01:13:54 AM »
BALANGA City, Bataan -- The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) on Friday announced the presence of red tide toxins in the coastal waters of nine towns in Bataan after laboratory tests found shellfish samples positive of Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP).

“The BFAR prohibits the eating, gathering, transporting and marketing of shellfish from the towns of Hermosa, Orani, Samal, Abucay, Balanga City, Pilar, Orion, Limay and Mariveles due to high toxicity level in 'tahong' (mussel) meat per lab test,” senior provincial agriculturist Danilo Abrera said.

Abrera said ‘tahong’ samples collected in the area showed 1,200 unit grams Saxotoxin per 100 grams of shellfish meat, which is beyond the regulatory limit of 60 ugSTXeq/100 grams.

“Our advice to our provincemates is to refrain from eating ‘tahong’ and not to gather for the meantime," he said.

Abrera, however, said fish, crabs and shrimps are safe to eat as these are not affected by red tide.

"But fish should be cleaned thoroughly and it is better to remove the gills and other internal organs," he said.

Abrera said that according to records, Bataan was last affected by red tide in October 2014. The warning was lifted Feb. 21, 2015. (PNA)
