Rebuilding of burned Koronadal market up
« on: May 29, 2020, 12:06:46 PM »
KORONADAL CITY -- The city government is targeting to start early next year the rebuilding of portions of the town's main public market that were gutted down by a huge fire last October.

Cyrus Urbano, city administrator, said Friday they have started preparation for the construction of new buildings and related structures at the burned right wing of the market.

He said they are currently waiting for the clearance from the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) central office for the rebuilding works at the center portion or main area of the fire.

But the official said the BFP has already issued the go-signal for the renovation of the second level of the burned right wing of the market’s building on Alunan Avenue.

“We’re regularly coordinating with the BFP to fast track the issuance of the required clearances,” Urbano said.

About half of the nearly one-hectare public market was destroyed in the fire that erupted shortly before 9 p.m. last Oct. 10.

The BFP said the fire could have been caused by faulty electrical wiring, but witnesses said it started in a stall that sells butane cylinders and other flammable items.

Urbano said the local government already completed the release of around P1.3 million in financial assistance to market traders who were affected by the fire.

He said 322 market stall owners and vendors have qualified for the cash assistance, which was drawn from the local government’s disaster response funds.

He said the beneficiaries received P1,000 to P5,000, depending on their occupancy classification.

Citing their records, he said a total of 246 stall owners received cash assistance of P5,000, some 51 occupying the market’s Masagana section got P3,000 and 25 “laray” or sidewalk vendors received P1,000 each.

The City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council earlier approved a funding of P1.6 million to assist victims of the Oct. 10 fire that hit the right wing section of the public market.

But Urbano said the released assistance only reached P1.3 million after they sorted the beneficiaries based on their occupancy classification.

Prior to the release of the cash assistance, he said the beneficiaries were required to attend an orientation seminar on fire prevention handled by BFP personnel.(AC/PNA) DECEMBER 2017
