The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Field Office III has deployed three social workers at the Diosdado Macapagal International Airport (DMIA) here in support to the national government’s efforts to prevent Filipinos from becoming victims of trafficking and syndicated crimes.
DSWD FO III director Adelina S. Apostol told the recent Regional Management and Development Conference that the social workers who are now part of the DMIA Task Force will assist and provide counseling to offloaded passengers, repatriates and deportees.
Apostol also said the DSWD FO III is now implementing the referral system for the recovery and reintegration of trafficked persons using the data-based system.
The reintegration of trafficked persons to their respective families is the best measure of the effectiveness of services provided to the trafficked persons, she said.
Based on the record, the DSWD FO III has assisted 108 deportees/repatriates from Malaysia and facilitated their return to their respective places of origin.
According to Fe Manarang, Social Welfare Officer II handling the cases, the most number of the cases were trafficking with 72 and deportation with 36.
Manarang said the number of human trafficking for 2010 has increased by 8.6 percent as compared to the 93 served in 2009. It was noted that Luzon has the biggest number with 69 cases followed by Mindanao with 30 and Visayas with nine cases.
With this, she said the DSWD has provided interventions like airport and transportation assistance and food subsistence amounting to P142,000. = PNA
