A vehicle was peppered with bullet by several heavily armed men on Friday evening in Barangay Atabiao in Tuao, Cagayan town, Cagayan Province.

Sr. Supt. Mao Aplasca, Cagayan police director, identified the fatality as Sofronio Mamba, car driver. Wounded were: Lenny Fausto, sister-in-law of Cagayan Vice Gov. Leonides Fausto and wife of losing 2010 Tuao mayoral bet Larry Fausto, and aide Michael Pagaduan.

Mamba was taken to a funeral parlor for autopsy while Fausto and Pagaduan were recuperating at the Saint Paul Hospital here in Tuguegarao City.

Police deployed four teams with Army soldiers to secure Tuao town due to the ambush.

Initial reports said Fausto and her companions were on their way home after distributing relief goods in Agunetan, Tuao when the armed men ambushed them.

Police initiated hot pursuit operations until midnight Friday but arrested no one.

Vice Governor Fausto pointed to ex-Rep. Manuel Mamba, his estranged cousin, as behind the ambush but the latter denied the accusation. (PNA)
