PhilRice bats for a rice sufficient RP

Iloilo City (1 July 2005) -- The administration of President Gloria M. Arroyo aims to make the country rice sufficient by the year 2006. The Department of Agriculture and other allied agencies are focusing their efforts toward this goal hoping that in the end, these will be food on every table of every Filipino.

Negros Occidental strongly supports the efforts of President Arroyo in fighting hunger and in the government's quest for higher yield.

Negros is a perennially rice deficit province. While efforts and policies are being shaped for Negros become rice sufficient in the next few years, the Philippine Rice Institute (PhilRice) is in the forefront of stirring the wheels to achieve such goal.

Recently, 46 participants joined the PhilRice two-day training on organic fertilizer production and utilization.

The aim of the training is to upgrade the participate skills on the latest technology on organic-based farming, understand the concept of sustainable agriculture and the value of organic-based farming, and formulate rice-biomass materials for the production of organic fertilizers.

It is also expected that the training will help them conceptualize and implement projects on organic-based farming and fertilizer production marketing in their respected areas.

A press release from the PhilRice said their office is promoting an organic-based farming technology to manage nitrogen fertilizer in rice production. This technology uses rice biomass and other farm and household wastes in the production of alternative organic fertilizers.

The Department of Agriculture also participated in the training wherein their allied program on "Tipid Abono" was tackled. The scheme gives on alternative measure tot he farmers who are beset by the rising cost of fertilizers and other inputs to turn to organic fertilizer.

"Tipid Abono" program also trains farmers on the proper mixing of fertilizer, selection of appropriate soil types and the amount of fertilizer grades. (PIA-LOL)
