The Philippine Embassy in Beirut repatriated 53 overseas Filipino workers (OFW) in distress from Lebanon, almost all of whom have defied the deployment ban.
The OFWs departed Beirut on February 06 and were sent off by Philippine Ambassador to Lebanon Leah M. Basinang-Ruiz, POLO Labor Attaché Maria Salome Mendoza, Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) Welfare Officer Aquilina Tarrobago and Embassy Assistance-to-Nationals (ATN) Officer Edwin Juan A. Batallones.
The 53 OFWs arrived on February 7 at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 1 aboard Gulf Air flight 154.
Representatives from the DFA, the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA), and OWWA welcomed the Filipino repatriates at the airport and facilitated their immigration and customs clearances.
Almost all of the 53 Filipino repatriates have violated the total deployment ban to Lebanon, and were illegally recruited. They arrived in Beirut between 2009 and 2011.
The Embassy negotiated with the Filipino repatriates' employers and with the Lebanese immigration office for the immediate issuance of their exit visas. - PIA
