PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, Jan. 3 (PNA) -- A report released Tuesday by the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) District in Palawan province said it rescued on January 1 around 88 passengers of the distressed cargo ML “Chowe†off the shores of the municipality of Sofronio Española.
The report that was signed and approved for release by Commodore Joselito dela Cruz of the coast guard district in the province claimed ML “Chowe†owned and operated by a certain Mohammad Ain Lukaiya was reported to be “in distress†on the said date after it broke its steering wheel due to “strong winds and rough seas†within the vicinity of Barangay Caramay, Sofronio Española.
It was on its way to Barangay Mangsee, Balabac in southern Palawan after leaving Puerto Princesa on January 1.
The PCG report said none of the crew of ML “Chowe†was injured, and all 88 are safe and temporarily sheltered in Brooke’s Point, where the cargo vessel was towed for safety.
As part of its standard operating procedure, the PCG will conduct an investigation regarding the seaworthiness of the vessel, and if the captain followed safety practices before sailing off Puerto Princesa. (PNA)
