PARANG, Maguindanao --Over P1-million worth of illegally cut forest products were confiscated by police operatives in separate operations here Friday and Saturday dawn.

Police immediately set up checkpoints after receiving reports that five hauler trucks loaded with illegal cut lumber and logs were to be transported to Cotabato City from the northern part of Maguindanao, said Chief Insp. Erwin Tabora, Parang town police chief.

At 4 a.m. Saturday, police seized a truck laden with lumber coming the forests of Matanog, Barira and Buldon towns, Insp. Tabora said, adding the owner failed to present pertinent permits.

Tabora said the suspects used the detour route from Matanog to Parang town in an apparent attempt to avoid police and military checkpoints.

Tabora lauded the residents for alerting the police.

A day earlier, police also flagged down around 2 a.m. four cargo trucks carrying wood products at a checkpoint in Barangay Poblacion 1 here.

Accompanying the trucks were Alimodin Zainal, 39, Ali Macauyag, 40, Samanodin Bara, 30, Lannie Tantua, 35, Mahda Ibay, 25, and Ali Capal, 35, all residents of Matanog, Maguindanao.

Tabora said the suspects could not present documents showing they are allowed to transport the wood flitches.

All seized forest products are now impounded at the Parang police station. (PNA/Edwin Fernandez) NOVEMBER 2017
