(PNA) -- The fully-grown marijuana plants and seedlings uprooted by lawmen in continuing operations since January 20 in the hinterlands located in the tri-boundaries of Ilocos Sur, La Union and Benguet were now estimated to reach some P1 billion
This was disclosed on Sunday by Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) Region 1 Director Roberto Opeña who considered it as the biggest haul scored by lawmen throughout the country ever since.
He confirmed that the operations in the mountainous areas in the boundaries of the three provinces already uprooted and destroyed some three million fully-grown marijuana plants and several thousands of seedlings as well as seeds.
All these were robustly growing in about 14 hectares of marijuana plantations tilled by several people, one of whom was arrested at the site, Opena said.
The computation of the estimated worth of the destroyed marijuana plants was based on the guidelines set by the Dangerous Drug Board (DDB) which set the value of one kilo of fully-grown marijuana plant at P300.
“So far, this is considered as the biggest marijuana haul in a single operation in the entire country,†Opeña said.
According to Opeña, the estimated amount of destroyed marijuana plants is still expected to increase as the uprooting operations being conducted by joint elements of the PDEA, Philippine National Police (PNP), Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) have not stopped.
The troopers were transported to the site by two helicopters from the Philippine Air Force (PAF).
“We are still expecting additional reports about the operations tomorrow (Monday) while we are awaiting the arrival of the other members of the teams from the plantation site,†he said
