An Army soldier was killed and another one was wounded in a recent gun battle between government troopers and New People’s Army (NPA) in the upland village of Cumao, Gattaran, Cagayan, the military said.
Army Col.Remegio De Vera,501st Infantry Brigade commander, identified the fatality as Pfc. Charlie Saquing of Tanudan, Kalinga and the wounded as Pfc. Celso Arzadon, both of the Alpha Company of the 17th Infantry Battalion based in Cagayan.
De Vera said the benefits will be given to immediate relatives of Saquing.
Military report said that army soldiers were conducting a combat patrol in Cumao village when they chanced upon a group of about 12 communist rebels belonging to the Northern Front led by cadre Dominador Javier alias Ka Babing, which resulted in a 20-minute firefight.
The military official believed that there were dead rebels who were carried away by their comrades in the gun battle as shown by bloodstains on their route of withdrawal. (PNA)
