The controversial concrete poles which were imported from China by an electric cooperative in Negros Oriental have finally arrived in Dumaguete Sunday, and are being offloaded at the DUCOMI port in San Miguel, Bacong town.
A total of 4,428 concrete poles were ordered by the Negros Oriental 2 Electric Cooperative (NORECO 2) at P52 million basically for the rehabilitation of rotten electric poles in Dumaguete City and in other areas, according to acting general manager Dionefred Macahig.
The first shipment consists of more than 3,500 pieces while the balance of 870 will comprise the 2nd
shipment.
The concrete poles were brought to the NORECO 2 acquired property in Maayong Tubig, Dauin, consisting of a six-hectare lot, more than two hectares of which is being planted to acacia and mangiums, now serving as a mini-forest.
Under the program of work, all electric poles that are obstructing the national highways within the city will be uprooted to prevent accidents.
Barring any untoward incident or outside interference, the concrete poles are designed to last longer than the wooden poles whose supply is diminishing. Thus, this will save the cooperative on maintenance costs, Macahig pointed out.
Meanwhile, NORECO 2 board chairman James Fontelo made it clear that they are not sleeping on their functions and responsibilities to extend efficient service to electric consumers and end users.
He reported that the board has just approved another resolution for the acquisition of equipment such as the digger in the amount of P12 million more or less to reduce the man hours in pole replacement and in other field works.
Fontelo also reported that within the week, they expect the election committee of the cooperative headed by Dr. Henry Sojor to submit their recommendations for the new general manager, after which the board will choose from two recommendees.
