The extreme heat Tuesday, the hottest this summer at 36.2 degrees Celsius, proved to be too much for players who come from colder parts of the country.
Maureen Agudia, Cordillera Autonomous Region’s (CAR) beach volley player, was rushed to the hospital after experiencing what Red Cross medics described as symptoms of heat stroke right after losing their match against Region 6’s Juvi Vinson and Genevieve Dela Cruz.
Agudia was vomiting and complained of pains on the back of her head and said she could not move, prompting medics to rush her to the nearby Sacred Heart Hospital.
This was the summer heat’s first casualty in the Private Schools Athletic Association (Prisaa) during the second day of the Prisaa beach volley tournament at the Azco Sand Courts here.
CAR lost to Region 6 in a close match, 21-19, 19-21, 15-7 which lasted for an hour.
â€Due to the very hot weather, we delayed the game from 2 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. but still Agudia gave in to the heat. I think that was the reason why she was nauseated and vomiting. If not for the first aid given to her, she would have collapsed,†beach volley tournament director Vangie De Jesus said.
She said the players from CAR are from the University of Cordillera in Baguio City.
