Health authorities in this city and Negros Oriental are alarmed over the rise in dengue cases in the province.
The latest casualty in Dumaguete is a nine -year old Grade 3 pupil of the Herminigilda Gloria Elementary School in Banilad, Dumaguete City, who died recently at the Silliman University Medical Center.
The victim, a certain Joseph Torres, a resident of Habitat 2 in Bajumpandan, was brought to the Negros Oriental Provincial Hospital last June 25 and was diagnosed to have symptoms of pneumonia and Urinary Tract Infection (UTI).
According to the mother, Jovita Torres, the doctor gave prescriptions for UTI and pneumonia but the patient’s health apparently deteriorated and the patient vomited a brownish color and later sticky blood.
It was only four days later that the girl’s family was told by the doctor that he had dengue symptoms and was told to prepare for five persons as donors of Type O blood.
Last Sunday afternoon, somebody advised them to bring the patient to the Silliman University Medical Center, but to no avail as it was already too late for the patient.
Records at the city health office showed 125 dengue cases for Dumaguete from January to the third week of June this year with 15 cases under validation, compared to only 65 cases in the same period last year.
On the other hand, records at the Department of Health showed that there are 235 dengue cases in Dumaguete.
City health officer Dr. Maria Sarah Talla explained that the number was still subject to validation. She said there are instances patients would tell during the interview they have relatives in Dumaguete.
Bajumpandan barangay chairman Orlando Enguig said they will be conducting a search and destroy operation against breeding places of dengue mosquitoes in Habitat 2 and in three other housing sites in the barangay.
