The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) will spearhead an earthquake drill in critical areas in this province on Monday.
The drill is part of the government’s efforts to heighten public awareness and enhance capabilities on disaster preparedness.
Gov. Wilhelmino Sy-Alvarado said the "drill will simulate a scenario of a magnitude 7.2 earthquake that causes piping failure" in Angat dam, where it sits near the West Marikina Valley Fault.
"This is a preparation for a worst case scenario. Residents near the area should know things to do in case worst thing happens," Alvarado said.
Aside from the Angat dam reservation area, the quake drill will also be conducted in Calumpit town, one of the low-lying areas that is expected to be submerged to massive flooding in case Angat dam breaks down when hit by high magnitude quake.
During the drill, disaster management authorities will demonstrate their response capacities in the quake scenario.
Local residents and Angat dam watershed settlers will also participate in the quake drill. - source: pna.gov.ph
