President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo opened on Sunday the Cansaga Bay Bridge, one of the vital infrastructure projects of the administration designed to propel growth and development in the island province of Cebu.
In her welcome remarks, Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia said the P2.3-billion bridge will sustain the status of Cebu as the center of commerce and trade in Central Visayas, thanks to the current administration.
The bridge, she said, will forever serve as testimony to the President’s unparalleled support, unparalleled care for the province of Cebu.
In his project briefing, Public Works Secretary Victor Domingo told the President that the bridge was completed seven months ahead of schedule in compliance to her order.
Fifteen towns in the northern part of the province stand to benefit directly from the heightened economic activities that the bridge is expected to bring about.
The bridge is 9.45 kilometers long. It spans coastal barangays of the towns of Consolacion and Liloan and Mandaue City on the western seaboard of Cebu.
In her 2007 State-of-the-Nation Address, the President described the bridge, then undergoing construction, as one of the important infrastructure projects of her administration, one that would serve as gateway to the island’s northern portion.
