Thousands of residents in Northern Mindanao and its neighboring areas benefited from the government’s multi-million 210-megawatt (MW) Mindanao coal-fired plant in Villanueva, Misamis Oriental.
Since President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo inaugurated the Mindanao coal-fired plant in January 8, 2007, the project brings good outlook to the economy as well as contributes as alternative fuel in response to government’s campaign for investments in electric power energy.
The project also expects to contribute 15 percent of the total power demand in the southern island aimed at attaining stability in electric power supply.
Likewise, the project helps the unemployment problem in the area.
One of the many businesses and cooperatives benefited from the project include the Villa Kusina Kitchenette Livelihood Project, which it said “is a big help in the town of Villanueva, the province of Misamis Oriental and neighboring areasâ€.
Officers and members of the Gawad Kalinga (GK) Organic Garden Projects at the San Roque GK Village, likewise, get additional income due to the coal-fired plant.
“The sufficient salary given by the power plant here supported my two college students,†said coal-fired plant worker Robert, who requested to withheld his full name.
The first ever Mindanao coal-fired plant is located in the 55.42- hectare PHIVIDEC Industrial Estate in Villanueva town, Misamis Oriental.
At present, the coal-fired power plant is supporting the supply of electricity to Mindanao, representing 15 percent of the island's total electricity requirement.
With this development, Misamis Oriental Gov. Oscar Moreno expressed his deepest gratitude to the Arroyo Administration for the establishment of the coal-fired plant in his province which has contributed income and generated employment. (PNA)
