The
mangoes in Guimaras province can still be saved from the
ill-effect of climate change, the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics of the Department of Agriculture (BAS-DA)said.
Dr. Romeo Recide, BAS-DA director, said the Guimaras mangoes could still be saved in cooperation with experts, the Guimaras provincial government and the stakeholders involved in the mango production.
The National Mango Research and Development Center (NMRDC) based in Guimaras Island, in an earlier report, said that the climate change, or the erratic weather pattern, caused the decline of mango production in the island province.
Recide said that producers should be sensitive in weather forecasting so as to mitigate the climate change in Guimaras.
He said that producers could control the time for spraying to induce flowering to make mango production more productive.
Producers could also adopt some innovations on how to protect mango trees from the impact of strong winds and other adverse weather conditions, he said.
"The foundation of the mango tree unfortunately is weak. Some of the stakeholders in the mango production in Guimaras have already adapted some innovations to withstand strong winds sometimes being felt in the island province," he said.
The Guimaras mango is being considered as the sweetest mango in the world. (PNA) RMA/ajp/JNAguirre/vlo
