Maguindanao Still in State of Emergency
« on: February 17, 2010, 08:28:45 PM »
President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo announced Wednesday that she has no plans to lift the state of emergency in Maguindanao, Sultan Kudarat and Cotabato City.

However, the President said that the three areas are already safe for travel anytime since government forces are in place since last December and will continue to be there until after the elections.

The President visited the once-troubled town of Mother Kabuntalan in Maguindanao Wednesday where she led the official turnover of core shelters for internally displaced persons and inspected farm-to-market roads.

She said she will act on whatever the recommendation of the Armed Forces of the Philippines will be.

"So far there's no recommendation from the AFP to lift the state of emergency," she said, adding that the state of emergency may continue if it is doing good for the people and the general public.

The three areas were placed under state of emergency following the gruesome massacre of 57 people in Ampatuan, Maguindanao.

Maguindanao was placed under Martial Law from December 5 to 12 to suppress what the military believed was a brewing rebellion by supporters of former Maguindanao Governor Andal Ampatuan Sr. who was linked to the massacre.
