(PNA) – The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) recognized the heroism of a member of the Citizen Armed Forces Geographical Unit (CAFG) for his act in securing the villagers from alleged extortion activities of the underground movement.
CAFGU Active Auxiliary (CAA) Tino D. Bangilon was awarded with “Wounded Personnel Medal†right at his bed at 11 a.m. Friday at Camp Panacan Station Hospital, Davao City.
Bangilon, a member of 72nd Infantry Battalion, was wounded as the result of the Improvised Explosive Device (IED) explosion at Barangay Mapula, Paquibato District, Davao City on Sept. 1, this year.
Lt. Col. Medel M. Aguilar, Public Information Officer (PIO) of the Army’s 10th Infantry (Agila) Division, said the incident happened when the unit of Bangilon was securing villagers in the area after the reported presence of New People’s Army (NPA) members, who were allegedly conducting extortion activities.
“The information came to the attention of some military units who were conducting community development programs in the area,†said Medel.
After pinning his “Wounded Personnel Medalâ€, Bangilon thanked the AFP leadership and the whole Filipino people for the honor he received. “Nalipay ko nga gidayeg sa liderato sa AFP ang dakong sakripisyo nga among nahimo aron makab-ot ang kalinaw ug kalamboan sa mga kabukiran†(I am happy that the AFP recognized our efforts in achieving development and peace in the mountains), Aguilar quoted Bangilon as saying.
In another development, troops of the 84th Infantry Battalion believed to have inflicted a number of casualties during an encounter with communist terrorists at Sitio Kabagayan, Barangay Sibulan, Toril District, in Davao City on Friday morning.
Aguilar said elements of 84th IB were conducting security operation when they clashed with some 30 heavily armed communist terrorists at 8:30 a.m.
He said that the rebels were reported earlier of being involved in the massive recruitment of minors in the remote barangays of Toril District.
