Illegal fishers in the Lingayen Gulf will soon be on the run with the arrival sometime this year of a fast craft from the national headquarters of the Philippine National Police (PNP) Maritime Group.
Newly-assumed PNP Maritime Group Director David Martinez said the fast craft will reverse the present situation when illegal fishers are practically outrunning lawmen who are chasing them in the Lingayen Gulf.
Martinez, who called on Police Provincial Director Senior Superintendent Rosueto Ricaforte Thursday, admitted they have no floating asset whatsoever and every time they chase illegal fishers, they have to rent local fishing boats.
He admitted that running after illegal fishers is one of the mandates of the PNP Maritime Group whose regional headquarters is located in Dagupan City.
To date, he said, the blast fishers have lied low because of the dangerous high waves in the Lingayen Gulf but once the sea calms down, he expects them to renew their illegal operations with impunity.
By that time, he said, the PNP Maritime Group in the region will be ready and will let the blast fishers know that there is a law.
He called on residents near the shore to report to his office any ongoing blast fishing activities in their areas and if possible identify the blast fishers. - PNA
