The Department of Agriculture (DA) on Wednesday estimated at least P5 million worth of crops were damaged in the floods that hit Southern Leyte this week.
This includes grains and vegetables which is planted on 250 hectares of arab lands in the region.
About 1,250 metric tons of rice were damaged in many towns, including St. Bernard, Hinundayan and Sugod.
Leyte Provincial Agriculturist Marina Gador is in Saint Bernard to personally assist further assessment of the damage wrought by the excess rainwaters to the ricefields there.
Gador reported to DA Secretary Proceso Alcala that the town of Hinundayan, some 100 hectares of farms planted to rice either “newly planted, (or) at the vegetative stage†were either described as “partially washed out and submerged to water†involving six barangays with an estimated cost of P400,000.
The affected rice-producing barangays of Hinundayan included barangays Bacolod, Lungsodaan, Bugho, Ambao, District I and District II, while the number of farmer-families affected has yet to be determined. (PNA)
