Latest News From the Philippines: Mindanao Peace

Latest News From the Philippines:

President Benigno Simeon Aquino III assured multi-sectoral consultations for the peace agreement which government aims to sign with Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).

"Stakeholders affected by the peace agreement will get together for dialogues on the matter," he said Thursday at La Consolacion College in Manila during the "Report kay Boss" townhall-style meeting Malacanang organized to mark his first 100 days as Philippine head of State.

He noted the dialogues will begin either in October or in November this year.

President Aquino said such dialogues are essential to the peace process as these will enable the stakeholders to air their concerns about the anticipated agreement's impact on their lives.

These concerns include potential livelihood opportunities in Mindanao, he noted.

"Lack of livelihood is among reasons for disagreements," he observed.

He said government can further boost its assistance and services for people in Mindanao if conditions there become peaceful.

President Aquino said government already talked to Malaysia about resuming that country's role as third-party facilitator for the anticipated peace talks.

He also reported government finished completing its negotiating panel for such peace bid.

University of the Philippines law school dean Marvic Leonen heads this panel.

Earlier, Malacanang said government will be at the negotiating table with a four-pillared peace bid proposal.

This proposal covers good governance, delivery of basic services, economic recovery and sustainable development as well as security sector reforms.

Malacanang calls this the "macro approach" towards ending hostilities in Mindanao.

Armed combat alone is insufficient to achieve and sustain peace, Malacanang noted.

Rebels and civilians alike also need government's social support so they can eventually lead peaceful and economically productive lives, Malacanang added. (PNA) - latest news from the philippines
