A highway robbery, which led to the killing of a political campaigner in a town in North Cotabato and the wounding of his two companions, was believed to be election-related.
Jun Obello, political officer of Nancy Catamco, a cable company owner here who is running as representative of the second district of North Cotabato, said the suspects that robbed employees of Pangao-an Cooperative along a road in a remote village in Magpet town last Friday were hired killers to silence George Cale, Catamco’s political coordinator.
Cale was driving his motorcycle on his way home when shot twice on his head at Barangay Magkaalam, a remote village in Magpet, around 4 p.m. on Friday.
After killing Cale, the suspects robbed the employees of the Pangao-an Cooperative of their cash amounting to P60,000 and exited towards Barangay Kinarum, a hinterland.
But the Magpet police, when asked, hinted Cale’s death was just coincidental.
“It was just a bad timing. Cale was on his home while the hold-uprobbery was ongoing at Barangay Magkaalam. The suspects thought Cale was the security escort of the employees of the co-op. So when the suspects saw he was coming, they shot him twice on his head,†said Magpet municipal police director, Insp. Luis Pederio.
Obello said they would ask the help of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) in Region 12 to investigate the killing. -PNA
