Kawiteño coeds, mentor bag regional campus journo awards

NOVEMBER 2017 KAWIT, Cavite -- Seven high school students and their mentor from Emiliano Tria Tirona Memorial National High School (ETTMNHS) are among the top winners in campus journalism awards during the Schools Division Regional Press Conference in Calaca, Batangas from Nov. 13-15.

The Calabarzon regional high school competition on campus journalism has drawn some 1,475 public and private secondary school contenders and 1,200 school paper advisers in the region comprising the provinces of Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon.

Town Mayor Angelo Emilio Aguinaldo congratulated the winners who participated annually in bringing home the bacon and pride for Kawitenos.

The school’s triumph helped retain Cavite Province’s top spot in campus journalism, besting all other provinces in the region for 12 straight years.

Carlos Jimwell Aquino emerged as Champion in the Best Group category for the Collaborative Publishing in Filipino, with Gerry Boy Valladares and Annie Jane Jaminal.

Aquino also took the top spot in Feature Page Category, while Valladares landed 2nd  and Jaminal 3rd in in the Newsletter Photography and News Page categories, respectively.

The three students will compete in the national level competition slated on February 20-25, 2018 in Dumaguete City.

The school team, with Ernest Reyes and Archie Villaflores, also clinched 2nd place in the collaborative publishing in English.

Reyes also topped in the Best Layout for Silang Sentry school paper and 4th place in Newsletter Photography; while Villaflores landed 4th in the Editorial Page category.

Other winners include Jhonloyd Mamaril, as champion in Best Group TV Broadcasting in Filipino, 2nd place as news presenter, 4th place in news anchoring and placed 4th anew in set design; while Lairah Nadine De Guzman landed 6th in the Editorial Cartooning-Filipino.

School adviser Earvin Sakilayan also emerged champion in the teacher category in the Best Group in collaborative publishing and also champion in layout design. He and Erlinda Perez as the school adviser in Filipino also received the commendation from the Kawit town officials.

ETTMNHS has consistently bagged the Overall Best School Paper of the Year in Division Schools Press Conference (DSPC) and 3rd Place in Science Investigatory Project (SIP) from 2012 to 2013.

“Lightseekers,” the school’s official paper, placed 5th Place and capped the high school’s feat in this year’s school divisions press tilt as “Best Performing School" in Campus Journalism. (PNA)
