Iloilo water supply reaches critical level
By Edwin L. Torrecampo
ILOILO CITY, Feb 18 (PNA)- The Metro Iloilo Water District (MIWD) has drawn up contingency measures to avert a looming water shortage in the city.
MIWD general manager Jaime Jalbuena said on Thursday that the water level at the Maasin Watershed had sunk to critical levels and expected to recede more as the rainy season was feared to come only by July this year.
Jalbuena said that water level at the watershed, the city's major source of drinking water, had receded by 32 meters, while at the Sedimentation Basin water went down by 10 centimeters.
He said that the markdown amounted to 35 percent of normal level, and may rise sharply in the coming months because of the anticipated long dry spell.
He said that starting Friday, water distribution in the city and the suburban areas would be dependent on a specific rotating schedule.
In the absence of precipitation, Jalbuena said that the strict implementation of the distribution scheme would help preserve precious water and ensure continual water supply to the city's 400,000 inhabitants.
