ILOILO CITY -- The provincial government here on Wednesday distributed PHP44.1 million worth of checks for the implementation of various projects in selected municipalities, villages and schools.

A total of PHP38.083 million was allotted for various projects in 96 public elementary and secondary schools, sourced from the funds of the Provincial School Board (PSB) chaired by Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor Sr.

Bulk of the budget was for the repair of school buildings amounting to PHP15.9 million. Other projects include construction of facilities like stage, comfort rooms, gymnasium/covered court, perimeter fence, water and drainage systems, slope protection, among others, with a budget of PHP8.7 million and procurement of instructional materials, books, chairs and other school equipment with PHP400, 000 appropriations.

Recipient schools were given budgets depending on the project proposals they submitted to the governor as chairman of the PSB.

Defensor, together with Vice Governor Christine Garin and some mayors, turned over the checks to recipient schools at the ground floor of the provincial capitol.

Aside from schools, the Department of Education Division of Iloilo also received PHP10.6-million financial assistance for Sports Development, particularly in the conduct of the Congressional and Integrated Meets, and cash incentives for medalists in the Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association Meet and Palarong Pambansa.

Meanwhile, PHP6,028,000 of the budget will be spent for the various projects in eight municipalities and 16 barangays in province, sourced from the General Fund.

The projects include the rehabilitation and completion of multi-purpose halls, construction of drainage canal, construction of covered gym, renovation of barangay halls, extension of day care center, rehabilitation of streetlights and footwalks, purchase of equipment for teen centers, among others.

Bulk of the budget or PHP2.7 million was allotted for projects in different villages of the third district of the province.

Defensor stressed that the financial assistance would really be a big help for them to further improve their services in their communities especially in providing quality education to the children through the improvement of their school facilities.

He assured that the provincial government will not stop extending assistance for the projects in the towns, barangays and schools in the province. (PNA)
