Vice Mayor Sara Duterte appealed to resident here for more patience and understanding for hundreds of lumad carolers from all over the region flock to the city every Christmas in the hope of receiving something from households.
The vice mayor wants people to understand lumad carolers, who’re now starting to teem across the city.
“It’s Christmas. Let’s think of how we can make people happy,†Duterte said.
Duterte said the indigenous carolers from the hinterlands spend Christmas in the city because of the tokens they receive from people in the streets.
Besides working the streets, they go from house to house, asking for a Christmas gifts, a hand-me-down blouse, a few coins, an old pair of slippers, and others.
The carolers are housed by the city government where they are allowed to stay until December 25. They usually spend their nights in Toril, Matina Aplaya and Bankerohan gymnasiums.
Aside from a place to sleep, City Hall provides them with basic necessities like potable water, good sanitation facilities, and some food.
Local residents, however, have complained about sanitation issues arising from the descending horde.
Many have pointed out the foul odor that reeks from their government-issued makeshift homes, usually resulting from defective or overused toilets.
This prompted the Vice Mayor to plead for the public’s understanding.
“Instead of complaining about the smell, why don’t you offer them water or something to be used to cleanse their surroundings,†she asked.
“The facilities (installed by the local government) are complete but due to the volume of people using them, it has become a concern. But we see to it that the things they need in their quarters are provided,†she said. (PNA)
