A man died and four others were injured in an explosion in front of a hotel in Cagayan de Oro early morning Thursday.
Authorities said the explosion of an alleged improvised explosive device (IED) occurred in front of Maxandrea Hotel along J.R. Borja Street at around 2 a.m., killing bystander Rudy Jute.
PO1 Rogelio Galilando, PO1 Dexter Gaño, hotel security guard Arnel Caninzia and an unidentified civilian were rushed to Northern Mindanao Medical Center after sustaining blast injuries.
Police said three men were reportedly seen leaving the bag containing the alleged IED.
Hotel staff immediately alerted the authorities about the suspicious-looking item. The responding policemen, however, failed to safely detonate the IED, believed to have been triggered by a mobile phone.
