The fatalities in the head-on collision between a truck and passenger jeep in Cagayan province early Monday rose to 13 as a woman died while being treated at the St. Paul Hospital here, police said.
Chief Insp. Rotillo De Laza, Piat police chief, said that the 13th fatality, Princess Belen, failed to survive due to multiple head injuries despite efforts of doctors to save her.
De Laza said the twelve other fatalities were identified as Roselle Valiente, Eduardo Oarde, Arman Cadeliña, Fatima Daliwag, Pepe Artiza, Jinky Ramos, Linchee Ramirez, Rogelio Ibarra, Rodalee Galiza, Randy Gumas, all of Santo Niño town in Cagayan, and Faustino Arquero, an Iglesia ni Cristo minister, and his wife Corazon, both of Burgos, Ilocos Sur.
Most of them died due to head injuries.
Probers said that the trailer truck (TXU 276), driven by Joey Salvador, was heading toward the Cagayan Robina Sugar Milling Corp. and was traversing the national highway at Barangay Villa Rey in Piat town when the accident occurred at about 4:30 a.m.
The truck, which had a blown right tire, then skidded off to the opposite lane, causing a head-on collision with an approaching passenger jeep (BVM 337), driven by Noli Nogeras, that was headed towards Tuguegarao City.
De Laza said the jeepney, which was on its way to this Cagayan capital and ferrying some students, was wrecked.
All the fatalities were passengers of the jeep. The injured victims were taken to the Piat Emergency Hospital in Piat town, and to the Cagayan Valley Medical Center and St. Paul Hospital in Tuguegarao City. (PNA)
