NAGA CITY---Entrusted with a bagful of cash worth PHP3.4M by the treasurer of Tinambac town who withdrew the money from the Land Bank of the Philippines (LBP) branch here, a government employee ran away with the cash intended for the Christmas bonuses of municipal employees and elected officials Tuesday morning, police said Wednesday.

SPO2 Tobias Bongon, spokesperson of Naga City Police Office, identified the missing employee suspected of running away with the cash as Melchor Abrazado.

Bongon said Ma. Teresa Betito, Tinambac municipal treasurer, reported the incident almost two hours after Abrazado disappeared. She said Abrazado, who accompanied her to the LBP, went out of the bank with the bagful of cash, saying that he would look for the driver of their vehicle.

Betito said she entrusted the cash to Abrazado since he had accompanied her several times when withdrawing cash for the municipal government.

She said the bag was heavy with money so she gave it to Abrazado.

Betito said when she saw their driver near the bank, he told her that he did not see Abrazado.

Thinking that Abrazado would still come back, she did not immediately report the incident to the police and instead called Tinambac Mayor Ruel Tuy, who instructed her to report to the police.

Betito said she and her two other companions, the driver and administrative officer, frantically called up Abrazado in his cellular phone but failed to contact him.

Tuy, a first-time mayor, said Abrazado has been an administrative assistant under the Office of the Mayor for about 18 years now.

He said Abrazado has no record of dishonesty and he retained him in his office with his full trust.

Tuy said the family of Abrazado had been informed about the incident and a police task force was already organized to search for him.

He said 115 regular employees and the elected officials of Tinambac town are affected by the disappearance of Abrazado with the money intended for their Christmas bonus. (Juan Escandor Jr./PNA)
