The Gearing Up Internet Literacy and Access for Students (GILAS) project of the Ayala Foundation has already established computer and internet laboratories in 2,000 public schools nationwide.
The GILAS project hopes to "promote information literacy" among students of public high schools by giving them access to Internet.
GILAS director, Mario A. Deriquito said the earlier target was to cover all the entire 6,371 public schools around the country by 2010 but due to budgetary constraint, it might not be doable.
“It’s not doable because of the huge financial requirement and it’s really not that easy. To begin with, 700 schools do not have electricity and not all schools have easy access to the internet,†he explained.
For schools that are outside cities that lack access to the internet, the option according to Deriquito is to resort to wireless infrastructure.
“We will continue to work beyond 2010,†he assured. Aside from the Ayala Foundation, the project is also supported by other institutions and groups here and abroad.
The total package for every school is P300,000 that will include P200,000 for the PCs and P100,000 for the server, internet connection and training for teachers. - PNA
