The hidden agenda behind the recent attacks perpetuated by the New People’s Army (NPA) in
Panay Island towns is simply to strengthen their position before the insurgents enter the peace negotiating table by projecting that they are still a force to reckon with.
This was disclosed by police regional chief. CSupt. Samuel D. Pagdilao recently after an encounter last Friday between policemen based in Capiz that resulted in minor injuries to three policemen and a civilian, the burning of L-300 van loaded with cigarettes in Leon, Iloilo and the harassment of Philippine Army detachments in San Remigio town in Antique province and in Igbaras, Iloilo.
Pagdilao said the resurgence of NPA activities in Western Visayas is a clear manifestation that while the Communist Party of the Philippines and the National Democratic Front, both political wings of the New People's Army, are interested in the probable resumption of peace negotiations between the government and their group, the recent attacks on government troops and civilian targets were carried out to fortify their position before they join the negotiating table.
At the same time, Pagdilao ordered all PNP unit commanders in Western Visayas to brace for the resurgence of New People’s Army (NPA) atrocities in the light of the recent show of belligerence of communist rebels against government and civilian targets. - PNA
