Fortune teller fails to foretell his arrest
by PNA
A man claiming he has supernatural powers and can tell the future, failed to foretell his arrest after he went further and pretended to be a lawyer.
Arman Cuban, 48, who hails from Manila and a radio “block-timerâ€, was arrested by the police Sunday morning after his promise to fix a marriage problem wasn’t realized.
His arrest came after he allegedly swindled P45,000 from a woman who sought his help in solving her friend’s marital problems.
Seized from his possession were P112,000 cash, three cellular phones, bank books, herbal products and a media identification card.
Cuban admitted to his crime to reporters and pledged to give back the money as he asked forgiveness from his victims.
Cuban, who also placed an advertisement in a local tabloid, offered services such as fortune-telling, curing diseases and feng shui.
A criminal complaint for estafa will be filed against him.
Last July 11, the woman, who requested anonymity went to Cuban to ask his help in solving the problem of her nurse friend based in the United Kingdom.
She said her friend was about to be divorced from her British husband.
Having no kids, her friend wanted their properties equally split, she added.
â€I saw Cuban’s ad in the paper. Although it sounded desperate, I sought his help just to resolve the problem of my friend,†she said.
She met with Cuban together with another friend in a mall.
Cuban then asked her P45,000 for 45 black candles that cost P1,000 each, saying he will use these for his prayers.
She asked Cuban whether she can just pay half, but he refused. She then paid Cuban last July 13 through the bank.
Cuban promised the problem will be solved after two days, she said.
When it didn’t happen, she kept on calling the suspect but her calls were unanswered.
Because she can’t track Cuban’s whereabouts, she went to another friend, who then pretended to be in need of his help regarding a land dispute.
Cuban, pretending he was a lawyer, texted back, asking them for P42,000.
The victim and a family friend sought police assistance in tracking Cuban down.
Cuban was arrested three weeks later, shortly after his radio show.
Cebu City Police Thief and Robbery Section Chief Rolando Pinili appealed to the public not to easily trust suspicious individuals like Cuban who promise they can cure everything.
â€Nowadays, it’s important we must be careful on who we are going to trust,†he said.
