A former mayor of Compostela town, Cebu province was killed in an ambush on Monday night.
Senior Superintendent Erson Digal, Cebu provincial police office director, said motorcycle-riding gunmen ambushed former Compostela town mayor Joselito Reynes while on board his vehicle in Barangay Estaca around 10 p.m..
Reynes served as the town's mayor from 1980 to 1986. He was elected councilor from 2001 to 2010.
Digal said Reynes was declared dead upon arrival at the hospital.
Police have yet to determine if Reynes's killers were hired guns.
Compostela town's Mayor-elect Joel Quino believes that the motive was politics.
Quino said Reynes's was his campaign manager in the May 10 elections.
The mayor-elect is currently in dispute with his rival, former mayor Ritchie Wagas.
Quino's proclamation has been suspended by the Commission on Elections due to an elections complaint filed by Wagas. - ABS-CBN
