A security guard of Domber Security Agency assigned at the Petron gasoline station in Barangay Binalud, Alimodian, Iloilo was fatally shot by four suspects early Saturday morning.
Victim Judel Nunez, 20, of Sta. Monica, Oton, Iloilo died upon arrival at the Aleosan District Hospital in Alimodian from a lone gunshot wound on the head inflicted by a 12-gauge shotgun.
When informed by alarmed residents on the gasoline shooting incident at about 3:45 a.m. on Saturday, the Alimodian Municipal Police Station (MPS) immediately alerted their counterparts in the adjoining Sta. Barbara and Cabatuan towns to intercept the fleeing suspects even as the Alimodian PNP also conducted hot pursuit operation that led them to Barangay Gaub Airport in Cabatuan town, where the 29-year-old Tirso Belarga and 18-year-old Roberto Calucdan have been arrested.
The arresting lawmen also recovered the 12-gauge service shotgun of the slain security guard from the suspects following their arrest.
Tirso’s younger brother 25-year-old Johnny Belarga, on the other hand, was cornered by the police blocking force at Barangay Consolacion in adjacent San Miguel town while Roberto’s brother Ruel Calucdan made good his escape.
The suspects admitted before the Alimodian PNP to have shot the security guard and took away his service 12-gauge shotgun before they hastily left the gasoline station.
In a telephone interview, PO3 Sandy Jarder, chief investigator of Alimodian MPS, said they were able to track down the whereabouts of suspects based on information from residents of Barangay Sulong, Alimodian that they saw the fleeing suspects passed their barangay before crossing the Alimodian River in their escape.
Meanwhile, Jarder theorized that the security guard may have fallen asleep from his post when gunned down by suspects using either the victimÂ’s service shotgun or the homemade 12-gauge shotgun of suspects.
Based on information they have gathered, the group was seen roaming around in town in the past and it was unfortunate when they chanced upon the helpless security guard whom they treacherously shot as part of their ‘agaw armas’ operation as the group lack the needed firearm which they could use for future atrocity.
Though subject to be confirmed yet, the Alimodian PNP has the suspicion that the group might have a hand on several unsolved robbery cases involving motorcycles, fighting cocks and other crimes against property in town in the past.
The Alimodian PNP will be coordinating with their counterparts in Cabatuan and Leon towns for background investigation on suspects if they have pending criminal cases in their respective home towns.
Police learned that the Belarga brothers were from Barangay Ito Sur, Cabatuan while the Calucdan brothers were from Barangay Banagan in Leon, Iloilo.
The Belarga brothers and Roberto Calucdan were ordered detained at the lock-up cell of Alimodian MPS to face criminal charges of murder and illegal possession of firearm.
