Three ladies were drowned when they accidentally fell into a swollen fishpond in Barangay Aponit, San Carlos City at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at the height of typhoon 'Juan".
The fatalities were identified as Cherielyn Patayan, 18; her elder sister Jeremy, 23; and their cousin Vina Cruz, 16, all of Barangay Tamayo, San Carlos City.
San Carlos City police chief Supt. Marlon Tayaba said the three victims were walking into a small dike while on their way to the house of their aunt when Jeremy and Vina slipped and fell into a swollen fishpond.
When Cherielyn tried to save the two she also slipped into the fishpond and drowned.
They were all taken to the Virgen Milagrosa University Foundation Hospital by responding policemen but doctors pronounced them dead on arrival.
This brought to seven the number of fatalities in Pangasinan as a result of typhoon 'Juan'.
Three others died when a big palm tree fell into their house in Barangay Sagud Baley, San Fabian at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. They were Ana Vidal, 29; and her son OJ, 4; and daughter, AJ, 4.
Another victim was Freddie Espinoza, 33, a farmer from Barangay Calomboyan, Mangatarem, who was struck by lightning at 9:30 a.m. on Monday.
At the same time, San Carlos City Social Welfare and Development Officer Valentina Dumangan reported that three houses were totally damaged in the city, affecting 17 residents. The destroyed houses were owned by Lamberto Canilang of Barangay Bugallon-Posadas, Thelma Samson of Barangay Bega, and Armin Mendoza also of Bega.
The houses of Joan Cayetano and Imelda Martinez, both of Barangay Balococ were partially damaged, affecting 14 family members.
Damage to agriculture in San Carlos City was estimated at some P10,000,000, according to City Agriculturist Estrellita Cabansag.
Typhoon 'Juan' destroyed about 316.5 hectares planted to rice in their maturity stage, and 32 hectares in their reproductive stage. - PNA
