PNA: The Saint Bernard town in this province was placed under state of calamity Tuesday after three people died due to the massive flooding.
With the state of calamity declaration, the town can now use its calamity fund, equivalent to five percent of its internal revenue allotment.
However, according to a report, Saint Bernard Mayor Rico Rentuza said that the fund is not enough to help the residents affected by the floods and landslides.
Based on the reports reaching the Office of Civil Defense, the three children killed in a landslide incident in Barangay Bolodbolod in Saint Bernard town were identified as Maria Fatima Discaryal, 5; her one-year-old brother, Rodel; and another boy, Jordan Lakipon.
Lakipon’s elder brother, Jimboy, 7, who was earlier reported to be missing, was found alive by some rescuers.
Based on reports, the three children were killed when their respective houses were hit by flood and mud spawned by the heavy downpour last Sunday.
Also Recabel Montederamos of Barangay Maanyag, Tomas Oppus town in Southern Leyte; and Patrick Pelaez of Barangay Pancho Villa in Sogod town also on Southern Leyte died.
Cherlyn Lubang of the Office of Civil Defense (OCD)-Eastern Visayas said that several barangays in Saint Bernard were hit by massive floods due to the incessant rain for the past days now.
Severely affected barangays were Tambis, Maria Socorro, San Isidro, Panyan, Carnaga, Ayahag, and Mahayhay.
Of these barangays, Tambis has the biggest number of affected families at 210 involving 910 persons.
About 18 families or 90 individuals from Maria Socorro were also displaced due to the flooding incident.
In Ayahag, 10 families composed of 40 persons were also affected.
Several families from Carnaga, Mahayhay, San Isidro and Panyan were also displaced but are now at the various temporary evacuation sites identified by the local government unit of Saint Bernard. - pna
