Ex-Biliran mayor gets 10 years for graft
News Release
MANILA, Philippines — The Sandiganbayan has sentenced a former municipal mayor in Biliran to up to 10 years in prison in connection with a supply contract for medicine worth P8 million.
In a 125-page decision promulgated recently, the anti-graft court’s Third Division found Noel Albelda, former mayor of Maripipi, and nine other former municipal officials guilty of violating Republic Act 3019 or the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act.
Aside from the prison term, the defendants were disqualified from holding public office.
Filed by the Office of the Ombudsman in 2018, the case stemmed from the municipal government’s awarding of a contract to private firm Suremeds for the supply of medicine and other medical equipment amounting to P7.99 million despite supposed irregularities.
